Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA — Ema (Gil) Wykes, 95, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014, in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Gloucester, Mass. She was born in Gloucester on July 19, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Frank Eugene Gil and Mary Theresa (Bettencourt) Gil. She was named Emma Rose Gil, and was the youngest of nine children. Ema was a 1936 graduate of Gloucester High School. She attended New England School of Art and Massachusetts College of Art on evenings until 1940, when she married Everett Carroll Wykes of Beverly. She is survived by three children, Douglas Wykes of Crystal Springs, Fla., Toby Waitt, wife of John Waitt of Beverly, and Eve Wykes of Manchester; five grandchildren, Scott Wykes of Marysville, Wash., Joby Feccia of Barre, Vt., Brenda Cecilio of Natick, Mass., Shawna Waitt Dos Santos of New York City, and John “J.J.” Waitt III of Beverly, Mass.; along with six great-grandchildren.
