Gloucester, MA — Smith, Barbara “Sis” (Mechem) of Gloucester, Mass., widow of former Mayor of Gloucester and U.S. Senator Benjamin A. Smith II, was born in Boston, on January 2, 1920. She and her family moved to Lake Forest, Ill., and continued to summer in Annisquam, Mass. It was during those summers when she met her future husband, Ben. From then on, except for two years in Washington, D.C., she made Annisquam her home, and where her family was the center of her whole life.
