Richard J. Gallagher, 86

Gloucester, MA — Richard J. Gallagher, 86, of Gloucester, husband of the late Mary Louise (O’Maley) Gallagher, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Beverly Hospital. Born in Boston on October 21, 1925, he was the son of the late Hugh and Katherine (Powers) Gallagher. Richard was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the Class of 1943. Upon graduation, he fulfilled his ambition of joining the U.S. Navy, serving his country as a Gunner’s Mate during World War II. He was also a longtime member of the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, Gloucester American Legion. For many years, Richard worked on the Gloucester waterfront as a longshoreman for Elliott Stevedoring. Throughout his life, he had an avid interest in spectator sports and attended many professional and local sporting events with his family. A former New England Patriots season ticket holder, Richard never missed a Pats’ game on TV in recent years. He also enjoyed listening to the radio, especially Red Sox games and the Sunday night Sports Huddle show with Eddie Andelman, Mark Witkin and Jim McCarthy. Richard loved big band music and during the summer months, Richard and Mary enjoyed going to outdoor concerts at Salem Willows Park and Hampton Beach, NH. In the fall, they would attend the Topsfield Fair every year. Richard was loved by everyone who knew him. He was a very kind and caring person and will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and generosity. He is survived by his daughter, Cathy A. Lawson and her husband Arthur of Gloucester, two sons, Richard J. Gallagher Jr. of Gloucester, John M. Gallagher of Randolph, two grandchildren, Kelly E. Brancaleone and her husband Jack of Gloucester, William R. Lawson and his fiancée Ashley Silberzweig of Hamilton, one great grandchild, Janelle O. Brancaleone of Gloucester, two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Curcuru of Gloucester, Elizabeth Aiello of Gloucester and several nieces and nephews.
