Robert E. "Robie" Wonson passed away in his home in Seal Rock, surrounded by loved ones on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, in a rapid relapse of the cancer which he had fought successfully four years before. He was born on Oct. 25 1953, son of the late Gardiner and Beryl Wonson. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth; son, Tad; stepdaughter, Emily; grandson, Fokus; granddaughter, Kaileah; his sister, Kathy; and brother, Gardy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his partner, Louise; their beloved dogs; as well as his niece, Tracy Wyatt. Robie began his life of fishing at the age of 15 in Gloucester, eventually becoming captain and owner of the Elizabeth Ann. He moved to Oregon in 1980 and settled in Seal Rock, fishing out of Newport as captain of the Jackson Bull, and later aboard the Captain Andy, the Deacon, and most recently the Tempo. He took a brief break from fishing to open Back East Antiques in Waldport, working with his brother to bring antiques of all shapes and sizes from one beloved home to the other, and share his love of them with many in the area. There will be a Celebration of Robie’s Life on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at the Fraternity Club, Webster Street, Gloucester, from 1 to 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations in Robie’s memory be made to https://www.gofundme.com/family-of-Robert-E-Wonson.
