GLOUCESTER: Murray Mugford, 84, peacefully passed on Friday morning, November 2, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving wife of sixty years and his seven children, following an extended illness. He was the beloved husband of Gwynivere I. (Geldart) Mugford. Born in Chelsea on September 1, 1928, he was the son of the late Leander and Emmie (Tucker) Mugford. He was a graduate of the Chelsea High School class of 1946. Following graduation he worked at S.A.M. Company in Chelsea. He then attended and graduated from the Boston School of Mechanical Dentistry and continued his education at Northeastern University and New York University. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he served as a dental technician and was honorably discharged in January of 1953. Following his discharge, he remained in the Army Reserves through 1957. A leader in his field, Murray had taught at Tufts University. He later owned and operated the Mugford Orthodontic Lab in Reading for many years. He and Gwyn had resided in Stoneham and Reading before moving to Gloucester in 1976. While residing in Gloucester, he was also a United State Postal Carrier on Saturdays. Along with their family, they enjoyed many years aboard their cabin cruiser, the Blue Fin, which was moored in the Annisquam River. He was former member and commander of the Flotilla 4-6 Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. A longtime active member of the First Baptist Church, Murray was honored to be named Deacon Emeritus in 2002. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his seven children, Robin C., wife of Roger Lyon, Holly M., wife of Brian Ordway, Bonnie G., wife of Randy Marsh, Heather E., wife of Michael Sherman, Elisa V., wife of Emanuel Ellertsson, Brenton J. Mugford, Heidi G., wife of James Pennimpede, fourteen grandchildren, Cheri, Rachel, Eve, Michael, Brianna, Christopher, Jonaton, Krystal, Benjamin, Katellyn, Kayla, Molly, Morgan and Kori; and five great-grandchildren, Brenton, Lukas, Alisa, Miley and Sarah. Murray also leaves behind his sister, Marion Bishop; three brothers, George “Bud” Mugford, Frank, husband of Hilda Mugford, Robert “Skip”, husband of Jean Mugford, and three brothers-in-law, Bernard Gillespie, Valdemar, husband of Jean Geldart, and Vance, husband of Margaret Geldart, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nellie Gillespie, Gertrude and William Baggs and George Bishop. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning at the First Baptist Church, 38 Gloucester Avenue, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 5 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. Interment will be held in the Seaside Cemetery.
