GLOUCESTER – Ruth M. “Sue” (Ryan) Mitchell, 68, died Thursday, November 15, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Joseph L. Mitchell and the late David A. “Benny” Haight. Born in Ipswich on January 7, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Julia (Francis) Ryan and William “Red” Ryan. Her mother was one of the first women to filet fish in Gloucester. She followed in her footsteps by working at Capt. Joe’s & Sons, the former O’Donnell-Usen and Kennebec Fisheries. Following her employment on the waterfront, Sue was employed for twenty-five years as a senior electronic technician at Varian Extrion. Most recently, she was employed at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Sue enjoyed gardening and reading. She and Benny enjoyed boating, fishing and they especially loved their motorcycle rides to New Hampshire. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie (Mitchell) and David Adkins; sons, Joseph W. Mitchell, and Toby, husband of Laura Haight; seven grandchildren, Alston, Trevor and Connor Adkins, Tiffany & Joseph Mitchell and Bryant & Benjamin Haight; one great-grandson, Anthony Mitchell; two sisters, Roberta Jones and Marilyn Burns; nieces and nephews, Veronica Makkonen, John Makkonen, Wayne Smith and Robin Smith. She was also predeceased by her sister, Patricia J. Hardeman; nephews, Richard and William Frazier and grandniece, Melissa Allen. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. Jay J. Isaac and Beth Shanks for their special care. A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, December 8th at the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In honor of her own mother’s legacy, it is Sue’s wish for you to lend a hand to someone in need in lieu of flowers.
