Rick was actively involved on many of the City of Gloucester’s committees and was a member of several boards for many years. Rick was also currently active in Action, Inc., where he served as a Director. He was an avid boater, owning, maintaining and operating a series of boats from sail to power. The ocean was one of his many passions, followed by his insatiable love of automobiles, their design and roadability. If you wanted advice on either, Rick was the “go to” person. He was on the board of Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue. Over the years, Rick and his golden retrievers were inseparable. He adopted a series of Goldens, most recently a rescue from Puerto Rico named Greta. Rick was a kind, generous person with a great sense of humor and was dearly loved by his family and friends. There will be no visiting hours, but a celebration of his life will be held at a later date and will be announced through social media and the funeral home’s web site. Contributions may be made in his name to Cape Ann Animal Aid Association, 4 Paws Lane, or to Action Inc., 180 Main Street (both located in Gloucester, MA 01930).

GLOUCESTER – Cynthia M. Fisk, aged 90, of Gloucester, died peacefully of natural causes on January 10th at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, MA. Born in Rochester, NY, she overcame many Depression-era obstacles to achieve her goals. A Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Mount Holyoke College in 1945, with a Masters degree in social work from Tufts University many years later, she worked in Ipswich as an elementary guidance counselor for twelve years. Then, she went on to be a psychotherapist at North Essex Mental Health Center in Haverhill for eight years, appreciating the chance to experience and assist people at a profound level. Cynthia was also an avid writer who liked to chronicle psychological and social interactions in both fiction and non-fiction as a way to bring some clarity to her own and others’ journeys through life. She was particularly well-known in Gloucester as a frequent contributor via her column entitled Mid-Week Musings and scores of letters to the ever-receptive and enthusiastic editor of the Gloucester Daily Times. She also sent letters to the Boston Globe, which generously printed a number of them. She considered Gloucester her spiritual home and often walked the Back Shore, her favorite place of all. She became known as “the lady who picks up the litter” wherever she walked. In this, she was a true example for us all. Only a head injury–that she received when bending down to pick up yet another shred of paper or aluminum can and losing her balance–could put a damper on her efforts. When she moved to Gloucester, an editorial bemoaned the loss of Cynthia’s efforts picking up trash in Byfield and Rowley. Once, she redeemed the cans she’d collected and uncharacteristically invested the proceeds in a lottery ticket, winning $ 65. She was thrilled. Cynthia was the loving mother of three children, Pamela Hepburn Fisk and husband Gregory Rodgers, of Pompano Beach, Florida; David C. Fisk of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, now deceased; and Brian W. Fisk of Gloucester. All her children were born at Addison-Gilbert Hospital. The widow of Wilbur Fisk who died in 1974 and of Kenneth L. Murphy who died in 1998, Cynthia carried on their tradition of being active in the community. While living in Gloucester, she was deeply involved with the Cape Ann Interfaith Commission as well as the North Shore Friends Meeting along with many local and national peace and justice groups. With her strong humanistic values, she had long felt that war is not the answer to conflict and that non-violent communication can yield true amity. She cared deeply for others with unwavering kindness, loyalty and warmth. Her friends far and wide will miss her dearly. A memorial service in the Quaker tradition will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 24th, at the Gloucester Unitarian-Universalist Church, 10 Church Street, Gloucester. A luncheon reception will be held immediately following. In lieu of flowers, gifts should be made to the charity of your choice.

GLOUCESTER: Philip Earl Amero, Sr., 81, died on January 14, 2015, surrounded by his family at the Addison Gilbert Hospital following a series of health issues. He was the husband of Karen (Martin) Amero. Phil was born in Gloucester on January 28, 1933, to the late Edward Amero and Irene (Kennefick) Amero Barrington. He grew up in a big white house on Essex Avenue near LePages, and loved to ice skate and play hockey on the pond there in the neighborhood. He also enjoyed playing baseball and walking in the woods with his brother and best buddy, Donald. Phil attended Gloucester Public Schools, and had various jobs in the food industry over the years, including being a cook at The Tavern, Oleanna’s in Rockport, Captain’s Courageous, and in the Addison Gilbert Hospital kitchen, where he and Karen met in 1991. They married in 1992. After leaving the hospital, he worked part-time in Gorton’s Cafeteria. Among Phil’s very favorite things to do on this earth was to walk Stacy Boulevard, sit up near the bridge and watch the boats, and have a conversation with friends yet to be made. He also enjoyed casting a rod over the railing on the boulevard; never caring if didn’t catch anything. Later in life, when his health began to fail, he loved sitting in the window of his boulevard home and watching the world go by. His favorite companions were his dog Tiffany, who he loved dearly and whose passing made him so sad he never wanted another dog. But he was talked into giving it another try, and along came Cuddles, the new love of his life and constant companion. Phil’s sense of humor was well-known among friends and co-workers alike, as well as among Karen’s friends who would call and get a bunch of zippy one-liners from the self-proclaimed “social secretary.” One friend called looking for Karen, and she told Phil she was moving. Phil said, “Let me know when you need help and I’ll send Karen right over!” He really looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren, and his day was better for having seen them. In addition to his wife of 23 years, he is survived by his children, Philip E., Jr., husband of Mary Amero, David, husband of Marly Amero, Douglas, husband of Debbie Amero, and Linda, wife of Brian Silva; grandchildren, Jason and Keith Silva; his brother, Donald Amero, longtime companion of Marianne Allen; a stepson, Sean, husband of Molly Lufkin; step-grandchildren, Drew, Ally, and Bret Lufkin; a special step-nephew, Richard Martin and his wife Jenn (Brown) and their children, Olivia and Lauren Martin; a sister-in-law, Carolynne, wife of David Lawyer; brothers-in-law, Kelsey, husband of Mary Martin, Dennis, husband of Geraldine Martin, Kevin Martin, and Sammy Martin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Phil was predeceased by his brother, Edward “Buddy” Amero, Jr. His funeral service will be held on Monday evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 7 p.m. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA or the Open Door, 28 Emerson Ave., Gloucester, MA 01930.
