Edward J. Pine lll, age 70, died peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Suncoast Hospice in Palm Harbor, Florida, after a brief struggle with cancer. Ed was born Sept. 8th, 1946 in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Edward J. Pine, Jr. and Kathleen A. Pine from Rockport. Ed attended Rockport Elementary and High School, before attending the University of Maine, Orono. He served in the Navy and Reserves for a total of 25 years ranking Lieutenant Commander upon retiring. He travelled all over the world in the Navy to places like Korea, Sri Lanka, Antiqua, and Hawaii. He also joined The Realm of the Arctic Circle which he crossed on July 3rd, 1975. The Navy sent Ed to Vanderbilt University where he earned a degree in electrical and mechanical engineering and a masters in business administration. During his residence in Illinois he worked as an engineer for R.R. Donnelley, a fortune 500 company, Johnson Controls and Siemens. During this time he got involved in expansive offshore racing on Lake Michigan on his boat, The Chocolate Chip. He had the opportunity to sail on the east coast to British Virgin Islands and Mexico. Following retirement, Ed moved to Palm Harbor, Florida as did many of his long time golfing friends. Ed’s passions were golfing, going to art festivals and working on his condo. He enjoyed baking and cooking and was a critic on pizza making as he attempted to bake the perfect pizza. He also was a groupie for the Rockin’ Johnny Band from Chicago. He was known by his golfing friends for keeping everyone’s score and his intricate knowledge of the rules of the game. Ed is survived by his brother, Bernard Pine and Bernard’s wife, Deborah Pine of Manchester by-the-Sea, his niece Allison Pine of Manchester-by-the-Sea, and his nephew Chris Pine of San Francisco. In addition, he leaves behind many close friends from Palm Harbor, Chicago, Illinois and Rockport, Mass. where is spent many happy summers. Ed’s thoughtful manner and soft spoken wisdom captured everyone’s heart. He reminded us that life’s moments were meant for safe-keeping not rushed through and forgotten.
