George W. Thurston, 90, of Gloucester, passed away on Wednesday evening, February 1, 2017 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. Born in Gloucester on November 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Bradley and Doris (Ethridge) Thurston. George was a graduate of Gloucester High School. He had proudly served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. George had worked as a foreman for the City of Gloucester Water Department for many years before retiring. He was very gifted working with his hands and could fix practically anything. He was also known to be very thrifty, having saved and reused whatever he could. George was also a lifelong genealogist and spent countless hours researching family history. He is survived by his son, Gary W. Thurston and his wife, Susan of Gloucester; grandson, Kevin Thurston and his wife, Stephanie (Mitchell) and their daughter, Nora Corinne; grandson, Jason Thurston; many nieces and nephews; an ex-spouse, Doris Thurston and three step daughters, Beth, Tina and Becky, all of Sarasota, Fla. He was predeceased by his son, Glenn E. Thurston; ex-spouse, Lois Laurie Thurston, his sisters, Frances Ruggles, Nancy Amazeen and his brother, Bradley Thurston Jr. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 9th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited. The burial will be held at a later date. Please omit flowers.
