Joseph Frontiero, formerly of Gloucester, Mass., passed away after a lengthy illness with his loving companion, Shirley by his side. Joe was born October 1, 1946 to the late Taro and Catherine (Ciarametaro) Frontiero. Joe attended Gloucester High School, Boston University, and Huntington College, Montgomery, Alabama. He also served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1967. Joe was passionate about fighting injustice and brought the civil rights case, Frontiero v. Richardson (1973), to the United States Supreme Court with his former wife, Sharron, resulting in an eight to one landmark decision. Joe had a varied career, first working in industrial chemistry, followed by a brief stint in auto part sales, the seafood industry, and the food service industry, before eventually moving to South Carolina where he found his true calling in the hospitality industry. Joe had many passions in life. He was an avid reader and a collector of high fidelity stereo equipment and records. He also loved cooking, fishing, his Sicilian heritage, his hometown of Gloucester, Mass., and his favorite football team, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Joseph is survived by his loving companion, Shirley Martin and family, stepdaughters, Lisa Russell and Jennifer Woodworth; step-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brittany, Brianna, Jennifer, Alec, Isabella and Todd; his siblings, Rosalie and Homer M. (Butch) Sweet, Jr., her children, John and Philip; Mary Rose and Steve Hildonen, their daughters, Catherine and Linda; Frederick Frontiero; Michael and Jill Frontiero and their children, Michaela and Andrew, his godson; as well as many cousins and a large extended family. He is also survived by former wife, Cheryl Frontiero. Roll Tide! Arrangements for a celebration of Joe's life are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date.
