Stanley Charles Whitten, 85, of Palo Alto, Calif., passed away on Sunday, May 21, at Stanford Health Care Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Gloucester, Mass., he was the son of George and Georgia (MacInnis) Whitten. Stan was a graduate of Gloucester High School and Bentley College, and served in the U. S. Navy. He was a controller who enjoyed a long career at Hewlett-Packard, and was self-employed as a tax preparer. He was an avid golfer and square dancer, an active member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, and a long-time volunteer at the preschool at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn (O'Neill) of Palo Alto; his four children, Debra of Gloucester; Sandra (Mary Ruggles) of Rockport, Scott (Cathy Fleming) of Danville, Calif., and B.J. of Castro Valley, Calif.; two granddaughters, Paige Whitten (Dave Hanes) of Napa, Calif., and Katie Fleming (Jason, Zach, and Natalie Lyssand) of Redwood City, Calif.; and one great-grandson, Brayden Hanes of Napa, Calif. He also leaves two sisters and one brother, Patricia Ireland and Robert (Anne) Whitten of Gloucester, and Eleanor Spence of Aspen, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, George Jr., James, and Ralph. A celebration of Stan's life will be held at a later date. Stan's family wishes to thank the many family members and friends, and the dedicated trauma and ICU teams at Stanford, who offered care, comfort, and support at this difficult time.
