GLOUCESTER: John H. Porter, 98 of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Gloucester, MA. He was the husband of the late Helen (Miller) Porter, who passed away in 1997 and the late Rosemary E. “Bunny” (Edington) Porter, who passed away in 2011. Born in Malden, MA on October 16, 1915, he was the son of the late Henry P. and Ethel (Felch) Porter. John graduated from Brewster Academy in 1932 and also attended Babson College. During World War II John built PT boats, he then went on to work in the printing industry until his retirement in 2006. John was also an avid golfer, shooting his age at 91. He is survived by three sons, John H. Porter, Jr. and his wife Louisa of Moultonborough, NH, Richard Porter and his partner Denise Schloman of Merrimack, NH and Robert Porter and his wife Nancy of Orange, CA; stepson, James Dudley and his wife, Elise of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and two nieces. GLOUCESTER: Gregory M. Moses, Sr., 59, died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital following a brief illness, surrounded by his family. Born in Gloucester on November 6, 1953, he was the son of James J., Sr. and Rose Elizabeth (Corliss) Moses. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and attended St. Ann’s School and Gloucester High School. Greg worked for many years along the Gloucester waterfront as a longshoreman. He was a member of the Seafood Workers Local 15. He loved the physical work, the unconventional hours, and the many friends he worked with. Although he stopped working due to a disability, he continued to spend time on the waterfront. He had a pilot’s license and flew planes out of the Beverly Airport. He also enjoyed fishing, taking drives around the Back Shore, and working on his tan in his parent’s yard. He loved Lebanese food, especially his father’s garlic sauce, and the music of Lynyd Skynyrd. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three children, Gregory M. Moses, Jr., Stephanie Moses, fiancée of Joseph Blanchard and Amber Moses; two grandchildren, Savanna and Tariq Moses; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jacqueline Moses-Robinson, Cynthia H. Moses, Joanne M. and Hugh Harris, and Karen and Aaron Beauparlant; three brothers and three sisters-in-law, James J. Moses, Jr., Peter and Rachel Moses, Wayne D. and Renee Moses and Sheila Moses; nieces and nephews, Rachel, wife of Nathan Farrar, Tashaa Robinson, Rose Stillman, Tanya Taylor, Max and Ryan Harris, Cassandra and Garrett Moses, Taylor and Celia Beauparlant, grandnephews, Hunter and Brandon Farrar; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Paul S. Moses and Thomas W. Moses. His funeral service will be held on Thursday evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 7 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 5 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. John Clifton Nichols, 83 passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Addison Gilbert Hospital with his wife and daughter at his side. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Dr. George C. Nichols and Jeanette E. (Scurlock) Nichols. A native of Gloucester, Dr. Nichols returned to Cape Ann with his family in 1930 to resume his dental practice on Main Street when John was one year old. John attended the Leonard School in Annisquam, Riggs School and one year at Gloucester High School before leaving to complete his education at the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA. After receiving his diploma, John joined the Air Force, serving with 1928th AACS Squadron from 1948 to 1952. During this time he worked as an Airport Control Tower Operator and was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant after preventing three F-86 fighter jets from crashing. The jets en route to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL had become lost due to poor visibility. John led the jets through a series of 10 steers enabling them to reach the base and land safely with only 30 to 60 seconds of fuel remaining in their tanks. Following his honorable discharge in 1952, John attended the Cartoonists & Illustrators School in New York City. His talent led to an advertising career in Birmingham, AL, Atlanta, GA and Salem, MA where he worked at Daniel Low & Co., for ten years. In addition to his wife of 60 years, Alden M. (Sypher) Nichols, he is survived by his daughter Denise A. Nichols, of Beverly, cousins George B. Nichols, Richard, Robin (Nichols) and Jonathan Perry of Gloucester, Judith (Nichols), Courtney and Kyle Nelson of Rockport, Robert, Sherry and Robert Nichols, Jr. of Milton, NH, John, Reneé (Nichols) and Jackson Burke of Strafford, NH, Andrew and Alisa Gagnon of Raymond, NH and brother-in-law Gilbert B. San Diego — A little over sixty years ago, Richard W Amero, left Gloucester and moved to San Diego, he then worked for over 30 years with San Diego Gas & Electric, retiring in 1992. While physically in San Diego his heart remained in Gloucester, his book shelves were lined with books about his home town and his walls were adorned with works of art by Fritz Huge Lane and would gladly tell anyone willing to listen stories of his childhood. He returned to Gloucester as often as possible and made a special point of attending his high school reunions.

Babine, who died in May of 2008. They had shared sixty-three years of marriage. Born in Rockport on October 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William and Ida J. (Mann) Mackey. She attended Rockport public schools and had been a resident of Gloucester since 1942. Lina was a homemaker, who enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo and her cat, Mitty. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Dorothy Babine; two daughters, Diane Roberts and Donna Pike; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. In keeping with her wishes, committal services will be held privately in the Locust Grove Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
