Margaret Marr Karcher, 91

Rockport, MA — Margaret Jane Kinghorn Marr was born in Aberdeen Scotland on June 18, 1921 and came to American in 1923 with her mother, Jessie, and older sister Mary to join her father, George, in Rockport, Massachusetts. Grandparents, and Aunt and Uncle joined them. Sisters Irene and Betty were born in the US. She lived on High Street in Rockport for most of her life. As teenagers, she and her sisters Mary and Irene sang advertising jingles on the radio. Margie, as she was known to her friends, graduated from Rockport High School and married Gloucester native Robert Karcher, whom she had met on the train to her job in Boston. After their three daughters, Judy, Jane and Dawn and nieces Karen and Betsy Brewer had grown, she went to Salem State College, completed her degree and taught third grade in the Essex Elementary school. She was the “Granny Graduate” when her first grandson, Rob Woseth, was born in 1972. During their 58 years of marriage, Margie and Bob enjoyed an active social life with friends and family traveling and entertaining. Margie loved to entertain and their home on High Street was remodeled with a large back porch for summer parties. Margie also loved walking on the beach and talking with her friends and family. Front beach was her second “home” when the children were small and then later on, Long Beach. In the winter she and Bob went skiing most weekends and school vacations in Bridgeton, Maine with children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was also a lifelong member of the Rockport Methodist Church. She leaves her children, Judy Karcher-Garcia, Jane Hazzard and Dawn Berkander as well as her sister Betty Speck, grandchildren Rob Woseth, Doug Woseth, Nikki Casey, Kate Palk, Scott Hazzard and Nickolas Berkander; and great-grandchildren Logan and Quincy Woseth, Jordan and Julia Palk, and Regan Casey, and the many children and grandchildren of her three sisters.

William D. “Bill” Jewell 2/5/2013 Gloucester, MA

GLOUCESTER: William D. “Bill” Jewell, 68, died early Tuesday morning, February 5, 2013 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital, following an extended illness. He was the husband of Marjorie (Purdy) Jewell. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on February 3, 1945, he was the son of the late Ronald S. and Grace G. (Trenholm) Jewell. He had been a resident of Gloucester since 1948 and was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1965. Bill was a machinist and truly loved his work. He was first employed by Standley Brothers in Beverly. He ultimately became a foreman at Gloucester Engineering, where he worked for over forty years until taking ill. He enjoyed building hotrods, boating and fishing. Spending time in and on the water at Goose Cove was a favorite pastime of his. Bill also enjoyed coaching C.A. Youth Hockey for many years and spending time at their camp in Gardner, Maine. Having been foster parents to well over fifty children, he and Marge changed the lives of many. In addition to his wife of forty-six years, he is survived by his sons, David, husband of Erin (Maki) Jewell, Michael, husband of Elizabeth (Noble) Jewell, Christopher Jewell, Jeremy, husband of Cassandra (Valencia) Jewell, Zachari Jewell; a daughter, Nicole Jewell; six grandchildren, Wyatt, Madison, Colby, Keegan, Mya and McKenzie Jewell; his extended family, Penny Sperry, Johanna Fulford, Elizabeth Crowley and Joseph Richard and their families; his sister, Lucy (Jewell) Carnes; his mother-in-law, Winifred Purdy; his sister-in-law, Kathy Purdy; four nieces and a nephew. He was also predeceased by his son, Jose O. “Joe” Odum; his father-in-law, Fred D. Purdy; and brother-in-law, Fred D. Purdy, Jr. In keeping with his wishes, services will be held privately. There are no visiting hours.

Lila Ruth (Peterson) af Klinteberg 2/4/2013 Gloucester, MA

GLOUCESTER: Lila Ruth (Peterson) af Klinteberg, 80, died Monday evening, February 4, 2013 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Sten Humble af Klinteberg. Born in Boston on March 7, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Frederick W. and Elna M. (Matson) Peterson. She was a graduate of Malden High School class of 1949 and had attended Boston University. She has resided in Gloucester since 1964, however her family had summered in Lanesville since she was a baby. She loved spending time at Plum Cove Beach. Well-known for her Anadama and Finnish Nisu, along with her husband, she ran a residential bakery for the past forty years. Lila was also an executive secretary at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Hotel Corporation of America, and Isidor Richmond & Carney Goldberg, where she met her husband, Sten. She later worked as a secretary at the Downtown Development Commission for the City of Gloucester. She was a longtime member of the Uljas Koitto Temperance Society in Pembroke, MA, where she spent many summer vacations with her family, sitting lakeside and playing Scrabble on the porch. An animal lover through and through, she was a member of numerous humane societies. She was also a well-loved assistant troop leader for the Girl Scouts. Standing six feet tall, with a quick wit, kind heart and easy smile, Lila made deep and lasting impressions on all whom she met. She was fiercely loyal to her family and always supportive of her children through many growing pains and life’s adventures. She was renowned for welcoming many with open arms into the family’s home in Lanesville for as long as needed. In addition to her husband of fifty years, she is survived by her children, Kirsten af Klinteberg, Astrid af Klinteberg, wife of Fred Day, Greta, wife of Tory Bagshaw and Elin di Angelo, fiancée of Michael Frontiera; grandchildren, Carson af Klinteberg and Elias di Angelo; her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Robert Edkins; sister, Dr. Astrid O. Peterson; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Sten Humble af Klinteberg, III; her sister and two brothers-in-law, Jean and Walter Chambers and Richard Swanstrom; sister-in-law, Greta Marston; and her nephew, Peter G. Marston, Jr. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 24th at 3:30 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington St., Gloucester, MA followed by a reception at the Lanesville Community Center. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge to benefit Dana-Farber Cancer institute. Gloucester — Catherine Grace (Bammarito) Francis, 89, of Gloucester, wife of the late Frank C. Francis, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013, at the Golden Living Center following a long and debilitating illness. She was born in Gloucester, on November 1, 1923, daughter of the late Antone and Maria (D’Amico) Bommarito, who died when she was only three years old. Her father remarried and his new wife, Catherine Bammarito helped to raise his children.

GLOUCESTER: Donald F. Howard, Sr., 97, passed away on February 11, 2013 at the Golden Living Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth M. (Holmes) Howard, who passed away in 1986. They had shared 44 years of marriage. Born on Bond Street, “the other side of the cut,” in Gloucester on January 8, 1916, he was the son of the late William J. and Mabel (Smith) Howard. In his youth, he played the violin, became an avid reader, played high school football and loved to cook. Sunday dinners were his favorite. In December of 1942 he married Elizabeth and immediately shipped out to boot camp. During WWII he was stationed in India. Upon his return home in 1946, he and Elizabeth started their family together. He accomplished much in his lifetime. He was a loyal son, supportive and generous brother, a loving and compassionate husband and a warm, loving supportive father to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an accomplished and successful contractor and carpenter on Cape Ann, where he established Howard Brothers Builders in 1949. He took great pride in the houses he built, as well as the relationships he forged along the way. Donald was a man of great integrity, with a unique sense of humor. He was well noted for his wit and his way with words. He lived a long, full and successful life and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will continue to carry the torch that he lit. Donald leaves behind a son, Dennis and his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Catherine and her husband, David Trooper and Susan and her husband, Peter Kazmier; daughter-in-law, Grace Howard Benson; brother, Eugene Howard; sister-in-law, Sarah and her husband, Edward Turner; grandchildren, David Howard and his fiancée, Sue Christino, Gwendolyn and her husband, Gary Bachinsky, Jon Howard and his wife, Rachel, Jessica and her husband, David LaCorte, Peter R. Kazmier and his wife, Darrah and Keith Kazmier and his wife, Susan; eight great-grandchildren; nephew, Bill Howard and his partner, Brenda Cooper; niece, Kate and her husband, Dave Willwerth and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by his son, Donald F. Howard, Jr.; sister, Dorothy Scott and brothers, John Smith and William and Russell Howard. His services will be held on Friday, February 15, at the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, Gloucester.
