Arlington — Sharon Stanton Russell, 68, died peacefully on February 27, 2013, after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband, Robert Mitchell Russell; a daughter, Kimberley Russell Slate, her husband, Bjorn Slate, and their children, Henry and Lucy Slate; a daughter, Brooke Russell and her children, Grace and Catherine Littell; two sisters, Diana Stanton-Thornbrough and Pamela Stanton. Sharon’s son-in-law, Andrew Littell died in December 2012. Born in Oceanside, N.Y., Sharon was a graduate of Wellesley College (BA 1966), University of Chicago (MA 1974), Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government (MA 1982), and MIT (Ph.D. 1987). A prominent and pioneering academic in the field of international migration who advised governments around the world, Sharon was a Senior Research Scholar at the Center for International Studies at MIT. Her research and publications focused on global migration trends and policies, the relationship of migration to economic and social development, and forced migration. Sharon was an active member of numerous academic and professional societies, and she worked with governmental organizations, including the United Nations and World Bank. Sharon’s early engagement in political causes led to a lifetime of strong advocacy for progressive policies. Her dedication to the advancement of opportunities for women and her belief in sisterhood were evident in her devotion to friendships, and her boundless enthusiasm for mentoring many young women whom she nurtured professionally. The importance of family and community was a value that Sharon held deeply. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she possessed an inspiring generosity of spirit, always seeking to forge connections and embrace friends both new and old. Graceful and beautiful, she was also fun-loving and took particular joy in sailing, dancing and choral singing. These essential qualities remained vibrant in her final years, despite her illness. She will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 11 a.m. at the Annisquam Village Church in Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sharon may be made to, the Myeloma Research Fund, Tufts Medical Center or The Association for Frontaltemporal Degeneration.

GLOUCESTER: Madeline P. (Katz) Linsky, 87, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at her residence following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Theodore “Ted” Linsky, who died in February of 2005. Born in Lawrence on June 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Esther (Black) Katz. She was a graduate of the Holten-Richmond High School in Danvers. She had resided in Middleton for many years before moving to Gloucester over sixty years ago. Along with her late husband, Ted, she was the co-proprietor of the family business, Linsky’s Service Station, on Maplewood Avenue since 1953. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Heard Chapter #94 of Ipswich for forty-nine years. Madeline was very proud to have served as an Advisory Board member of Gloucester Assembly #41, International Order of the Rainbow Girls and was honored to have received the Grand Cross of Color, their highest award, for her dedicated service to the Order. She was also a member of the Rockport American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet L. and Gregory Lemnah, Edith and John Montgomery; her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Jane (Manninen) Linsky; five grandchildren, Jessica, wife of Michael Spinelli; John Linsky; Josephine Linsky, fiancée of Shawn Lowe; Jacklyn Linsky and Kira Lemnah and her significant other, Matt Dority; a great-grandson, Lucas Spinelli; a soon to be born great-granddaughter, Mia Jane Spinelli; a brother and two sisters-in-law, George and Dorothy Katz and Victoria Linsky; many nieces, nephews and special friends, Dorothy Quigley, Mary Feener and Cheryl McPhee. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Philip Kent and Steven King. Her funeral service will be held on Monday, March 18th in the Mount Jacob Cemetery, Fernald Street, West Gloucester at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 17th in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 1 – 4 p.m. Shiva will be observed at the home of Steve and Jane Linsky, 11 Linden Road, Gloucester on Monday, March 18th from 1 – 3 and 5 – 8 p.m. with a Ma’ariv service at 7:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. WEST GLOUCESTER: LeRoy H. “Roy” Garland, 88, died peacefully Tuesday morning, March 19, 2013, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Eleanore J. (Dort) Garland, who died on October 22, 2012. They had shared sixty years of marriage. Born in Gloucester on May 14, 1924, he was the son of the late Norman M., Sr. and Caroline H. (Middleton) Garland. He was a lifelong resident and graduate of Gloucester High School. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he enlisted in June of 1942 and seved through January of 1946. Roy joined the Gloucester Fire Department in 1947 and served until his retirement in 1984. At that time, he was on Engine No. 5 at the West Gloucester Station and proudly held Badge #1. He fought in all the major fires in Gloucester in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He had met his beloved wife, Eleanore, while responding to a fire at Archie’s, her family restaurant, in Magnolia Square. He and his brother, Norm, along with a group of brothers from the Fire Department, enjoyed traveling to their camp in Maine for deer hunting season in November. He was an active member of the Gloucester Fireman’s relief Association and also anjoyed golfing. He is survived by his sister, Esther Garland of FL; his brother-in-law, Charles, husband of Mary Dort of Ipswich; dear friends, Earle and June Greenwood, William and Gloria Newman and Douglas and Sharon MacArthur; and among many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, he leaves Darlene Harding and her family. He was also predeceased by his brother, Norman M. “Bub” Garland, Jr. and a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Stilson Cleveland. His funeral service will be held on Friday morning in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Gloucester Firefighter’s Relief Fund, 8 School Street, Gloucester. Interment will be held in the Beechbrook Cemetery.

GLOUCESTER: George O. Korpi, 79, died at his home on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, following an extended illness. He was the husband of the late Barbara M. (Hopkins) Korpi, who died in July of 2002. They had shared forty-seven years of marriage. Born in Rockport on August 27, 1933, he was the son of the late John Jacob and Iiri (Knuuttunen) Korpi. He was a graduate of the Rockport High School class of 1951. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served aboard the Destroyer USS Harris. Over the years, he had the pleasure of attending numerous Naval reunions throughout the country. George was employed by the U.S. Postal service, having been a clerk as well as holding other positions. He was a fifty-year member of the Loyal Order of Moose Chapter #896, as was his father. He was also a member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892 and the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion. George enjoyed playing softball and for many years and was a pitcher for the Old Timer’s Tavern and Pratty’s, CAV. In later years, he was the representative for the Moose One Pitch Tournaments. His favorite pastime was going to the Elks daily and playing cards with his friends. He is survived by a daughter, Donna L. Korpi; son, George O. Korpi, Jr., companion of Mary Capobianco; five grandchildren, Erick Korpi, who he raised from childhood, Krystle Sweeney, Nicholas Murphy, Jason LeBlanc and Lynette LaBonne; great-grandchildren, Kayla and Maggie Auburn, Eric LaBonne, Anastasia Ballou, David Howland, Lydia Gray and Alexander LeBlanc; two brothers, Onni, husband of Helen Korpi, John, husband of Eva Korpi; a sister, Sylvia Makkonen and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Deborah M. Korpi, two sisters-in-law, Ellie Korpi and Jean Pettipas and a brother-in-law, Nilo Makkonen. His funeral service will be held on Monday morning in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 – 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery.
