GLOUCESTER: Salvatore “Sam” Demetri, 90, died peacefully Tuesday, February 26, 2013 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Rose (Aiello) Demetri. Born in Boston on September 11, 1922, he was the son of the late Constantino and Catherine (Sabella) Demetri. Sam was a hard working fisherman engineer aboard many vessels including “Grace & Salvatore”, “Hazel B” and “Lady in Blue.” After giving up his life on the water, Sam went to work at Gorton’s, Gloucester Engineering and Danversport Yacht Club and finally Rose said it’s time to sit back and enjoy retirement. Sam’s greatest joy in life was his family. He loved having them all together at family events. He will always be remembered as a true gentleman and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He also had the good fortune of reconnecting with his cousins that he hadn’t seen for over fifty years and kept a close relationship and loving bond with each other. Sam was a life member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elks No. 892 and a former member of the St. Peter’s Club. In addition to his wife of sixty-six years, he is survived by two daughters, Katherine Dias and her husband, Anthony and Maria Gay; his son, Vito Demetri and his wife, Sandra; six beloved grandchildren, Rosemarie Randazzo and her husband, Joe, Justin Demetri and his wife, Danielle, Vanessa Gigliotti and her husband, Josh, Olivia Houde and her husband, Nathan, Stephen Demetri and Nicole Johnson and her husband, Len; eight great-grandchildren, Peter and Renee Randazzo, Marcus Demetri, Ava and Michael Gigliotti, Neil Houde and Tyler Johnson; five sisters, Jenny Palazola, Lucy Bertolino, Virginia Parisi, Lillian “Babe” Caciagli and her husband Tony and Kay Aiello and her husband, Joseph; four sisters-in-law, Pauline Piscitello, Jenny Curcuru, Diana Aiello and Grace Pallazola and her husband, Tom; brother-in-law, Sam Aiello and his wife, Rose; former daughter-in-law, Deborah Demetri and many loving nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his son, Stephen Demetri, son-in-law, John Gay; three brothers, Augustus Demetri, Gussie and his wife, Frances Demetri and Nofrie and his wife, Sadie Demetri, four sisters, Josie and her husband, Frank Santuccio, Vita and her husband, Dominic Santin, Frances and her husband, Ponci Sinagra and Fannie and her husband, James Panto, seven brothers-in-law, Frank Palazola, James Bertolino and Charles Parisi, Joseph Piscitello, James Curcuru, Tony Aiello and John Aiello and his wife, Lena and a sister-in-law, Anty Militello and her husband, Frank. Clifford I. “Buster” Groves, 76
Gloucester, MA — Clifford Ingram “Buster” Groves, the beloved husband of Irene (Hartford) Groves, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. He was surrounded by his loving family and is at rest after a courageous twenty-one year battle with cancer. Born in Cumberland, Maryland on July 12, 1936, Clifford was the son of the late Howard and Eva Marie (Longerbean) Groves. As a young man, Cliff moved to Gloucester and enlisted in the U.S. National Guard where he proudly served his country for six years. He then worked as an auto mechanic for several years prior to initiating a successful career as a carpenter in the Boston and North Shore area. Following his carpentry career, Cliff satisfied his passion for the sea and salty air when he acquired a boat and enjoyed a period of commercial lobstering. He did not make much of a financial profit due to of his personal love of lobster. Cliff brought the bulk of his catch home to share with his friends and family rather than sell it in the market. Cliff enjoyed life and was a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He was an avid outdoorsman who appreciated nature and exploring the wilderness. Cliff enjoyed hiking, hunting, and long snowmobile trips with his family during frequent visits to his vacation home in Stowe, Maine. He enjoyed the outdoors on sunny days with his wife, children and friends at the beach, on the boat waterskiing through “The Bubble” in the Gloucester Harbor, relaxing at the Saco River, and taking long rides on his Harley “Hog”. He took pleasure in playing his guitar, country and western music, and watching western reruns on television. In addition to his wife Irene, he is survived by his son Clifford Groves Jr. and his wife Mary of Gloucester; daughter Leila Lacey and her husband Brian of Hampton, NH; daughter Kim Davis-Assaker and her husband Rashid of Gloucester; son Bart Groves and his wife Suzanne of South Hamilton, MA; as well as twelve loving grandchildren; Leila, Emily, Melissa, Andrea, and Hailey Davis; Vanessa, Ryan, and Sean Lacey; Bart Jr. and Brendan Groves; Clifford III and Elizabeth Groves; two great-grandchildren; Tatyana and Conrad Groves; and several nieces and nephews. Cliff is also survived by his brothers Donald, Dennis, Ellsworth, and Howard Jr.; sisters Evelyn and Margaret, located in Cumberland, MD and the vicinity. He was predeceased by one brother, Edward.

GLOUCESTER: Mary Jayne Avila, 68, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Devereux House, Marblehead following an extended illness. Born in Gloucester on February 26, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Elsie (Roderick) Avila. A lifelong resident of Gloucester, she was a graduate of the Gloucester High School and Emmanuel College, where she received her Master’s degree. She had been employed as a Spanish teacher at Gloucester High School and Rockport High School. She was also a graduate of Suffolk University, where she earned a Juris Doctorate and had practiced law on a part-time basis. She had also taught beginning law at Suffolk University. Jayne held a pilot’s license and enjoyed traveling extensively. Other favorite pastimes included picking blueberries, flower and vegetable gardening. She is survived by three sisters, Barbara, wife of George Geyer, Elaine, wife of Eugene Jamison, Joyce, wife of Edwin Perkins; her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Avila; four nieces, Deborah Tibbets, Nancy Avila, Maribeth LeBlanc and Susan Moran; four nephews, Peter Avila, Edwin Perkins, Jr., Christopher Jamison and Craig Jamison; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, Roderick Avila. In keeping with her wishes, committal services will be held privately in the Calvary Cemetery. There are no visiting hours. East Lyme, CT — Carolyn (Carlie) M. Powers (Klestinec) Gunn, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on March 23, 1917, daughter of Mary McPhee and John H. Powers. Died on February 22, 2013 at age 95. Carolyn attended St. Ann’s Elementary School, and Gloucester High School, graduating in 1934. She graduated from Salem State Teacher’s College in 1937. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Boston University in 1942 and a Master’s Degree of Science in Education from Southern Connecticut State College in 1967/1968. Carolyn taught school at the Maplewood Elementary School, Gloucester, Massachusetts from 1937 to 1944 and the Essex Elementary School in Essex, Connecticut from 1967 to 1978. Carolyn joined the U.S. Coast Guard serving as a Spar during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Carolyn was married to Robert J. Klestinec of the U.S. Coast Guard who predeceased her, and to Gilman C. Gunn, Jr. of Groton, Connecticut, who also predeceased her.

GLOUCESTER: Mary P. (Buckley) DeCaro, 58, died peacefully Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, with her family by her side. She was the wife of Sam DeCaro. Born in Boston on June 2, 1954, she moved to Gloucester as a child. Mary grew up in Lanesville, where she made many lifetime friends, whom she treasured as family. She was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1972. Mary moved several times only to return to Gloucester where she felt her heart belonged. She was employed for many years as a bartender at the Village Restaurant in Essex. A loving and devoted mother, Mary could often be found at countless soccer games, basketball games, the track, on the banks of the Charles River and the shores of many triathlons rooting on her girls. As a mother, she taught her girls the true value of life, love, and laughter and how to always be true to themselves. Mary had a passion for life. She was a great cook and loved to entertain friends. She enjoyed great gatherings and good conversation, which often lingered long into the night. If anyone ever needed a friend for a laugh or a tear, Mary was always there. Friends were always an important aspect to Mary’s life and she loved them with all her heart. She loved going to beaches with her friends and family. She also enjoyed long walks near the ocean, and company was always fine, but nobody could ever keep up. The presence and love of Mary’s Circle of Friends, best described as family, eased her suffering and pain with endless support and for that, her family is eternally grateful. Mary loved her family and friends and will be greatly missed by her loving husband, Sam; their three daughters and their spouses, Christie Swett and Jennifer Royal, Katie Swett and Derek LeClair, and Jaime and Joshua Birk. She especially enjoyed time spent with her five grandchildren, Calum Royal, Annabelle LeClair, Indigo Birk, and the twins, Isla and Aisling Royal. She was also predeceased by her beloved “Auntie Ann” Sister Margaret Mary of the Sisters of St. Joseph. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, March 5th at the American Legion, 14 Church St., Manchester-by-the-Sea at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Buford, Georgia – Gilbert (Gillie) Rose, born in Gloucester Massachusetts December 12, 1921, son of the late Francis and Alice Rose, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2013 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife Lorraine (Holmes) Rose of Buford GA, his daughter Pamela DiMascio of Buford GA, and his two sons David Rose of Anthem AZ and Glenn Rose of Gloucester MA, his two sisters Alice Kruger of Langdon NH and Josephine Dewar of Pismo Beach CA. He was a career serviceman spending 21 years in the Air Force. He served his country in three wars, World War II, Korean and Vietnam. He was a navigator and bombardier in World War II flying missions over Europe and Germany, were he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery. During the cold war he was assigned a new field, Air Traffic control, after tech school he was sent to participate in the Berlin airlift. He played sports throughout his service career, playing on the all European Basketball Championship teams in 1949, 1950, and 1951. With the exception of his last six years, Gillie was a lifelong resident Gloucester. He actively participated in town hall meetings fighting against higher taxes. His greatest joy was sports; he played Basketball, slow pitch softball and volleyball on city league teams. After his playing days he umpired baseball and softball into his seventies, if you played ball in Gloucester you knew Gillie Rose. He always followed his beloved Red Sox never missing a game. When the Red Sox won the World Series it fulfilled a lifelong wish.
