GLOUCESTER – James S. Contri, 71, died Wednesday evening, March 12, 2014 at his home. He was the husband of Mary J. (Loiacano) Contri. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May. Born in Oakland, California on October 10, 1942, he was the son of the late Jimmie J. and Mary J. (Agosta) Contri. He was raised in Crockett and his family moved to Vallejo where attended high school. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged in May of 1966. He met Mary when he came to Gloucester on leave with his friend, Michael Calomo. He was employed by St. Ann’s Church for many years, having worked in Calvary Cemetery. He later became an inspector for Osram Sylvania, where he remained until his retirement. Jim always longed for his hometown, but made a home for his wife in family in Gloucester. He enjoyed a good meal with family and friends. A loving and devoted husband and father, he lived for his family. His greatest joy came from seeing the little ones and watching them grow. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Angela Contri and Joanne Contri; five grandchildren, Jennifer Odum Ryan, wife of Chief Justin Ryan, USN, Leanne Odum, James Odum, Dominic Tocco and Dion Tocco; six great-grandchildren, Jared, Angelina, Madison, Sammy, Cody and Emmitt, plus one on the way; his sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Paul Grilli; a niece, Gina Grilli and nephew, James Ussery; a special aunt, Josie Agosta; sister-in-law, Dini, wife of Peter Favazza; brother-in-law, Bill Toppan and his family; a niece, as well as many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Joe Fomasi; a special uncle, Joe Agosta; his dear grandfather who meant the world to him, Salvatore “Nono” Agosta; sister-in-law, Phyllis Toppan; his in-laws, Angelina Loiacano Strescino and Salvatore Loiacano; stepfather-in-law, Rico Strescino; and stepbrothers-in-law, Richie and Donny Strescino. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday morning in the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church, Pleasant St., Gloucester, MA 01930 or VNA Care Network & Hospice, 199 Rosewood Dr., Danvers, MA 01923. GLOUCESTER: Elinor Condit Winslow (Mrs. Andrew N. Winslow, Jr.), 109, died peacefully on March 13, 2014, at her home on Way Road, East Gloucester, with her family and caregivers close by. Mrs. Winslow, affectionately called “Mimi” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born in West Newton, on July 22, 1904, the daughter of Sears B. and Mary Louise (Hoyt) Condit, Jr. She was predeceased by her sister Louise Condit. She grew up in Brookline and lived most of her life on Chestnut Street, Beacon Hill, Boston, summering at Way Road from early childhood, first in her parent’s house “On a Ledge” and later in the house she and her husband acquired across the street, into which she moved permanently in 1995. Mrs. Winslow was educated at the Park School in Brookline and at the Brimmer and May School. In 1925 she married Andrew N. Winslow, Jr., who attended Harvard and was a principal in the investment firm of Chase, Whiteside, West and Winslow, until his death in 1967. In Boston, Mrs. Winslow volunteered during the Second World War as a plane spotter for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. She was also a member of the Ladies Visiting Committee of the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. For many years she was a member of the Vincent Club. She and her husband were members of The Somerset Club and The Country Club. In Gloucester, she and her husband were proprietary members of The Bass Rocks Beach Club and members of The Bass Rocks Golf Club and The Eastern Point Yacht Club. Mrs. Winslow enjoyed curling, playing tennis and golf, skiing, and sailing with her family. She was a true Bruins fan, having seen her first game with her father in the 1920s at the old Boston Arena. Her family had season tickets for years and she got to know some of the players personally. She attended her last game at the age of ninety, but still watched the games on television and continued to follow the latest team news. Mrs. Winslow is survived by her son, Sears C. Winslow, and his wife Carolyn, of North Andover and Franconia, NH, and her daughter, Judith Winslow Walcott, partner of Peter Anastas, of Gloucester. She was predeceased by her second son, Peter L. Winslow, husband of Nancy J. Winslow of Manchester, and her grandsons Robert Nickerson Winslow and Charles Todd Winslow. In addition to her son and daughter she is survived by seven grandchildren, Wende Winslow Beck and her husband Timothy of Norwich, Vermont, Elinor Condit (Lili) Winslow and her partner Jim Weitz, of Cambridge, Elisabeth Walcott and her husband Stephan Miller of Solana Beach, California, Diana Walcott of Boston, Heidi Winslow of Manchester, Peter S. Winslow and his wife Olivia C. Winslow of Newbury, and Dr. J. Thacher Winslow and his wife Janet of Lander, Wyoming; and twelve great-grandchildren, Anna Beck and her husband Scott Bimba, Samuel Beck and his wife Abby, Christopher Beck, Kailee M. Winslow, Caroline L. Winslow, Emilie C. Winslow, Timothy M. Winslow, Madeleine S. Winslow, Mason N. Winslow, Cierra G. Winslow, Celeste E.R. Winslow and her husband Ala Jamel, and Lila Winslow Miller. A memorial service will be held on July 22, 2014, which would have been her 110th birthday at a time and place to be announced. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. GLOUCESTER – Dorothy Addams Brown, or “Dotty” as she was fondly known, died gracefully in her home on Eastern Point in Gloucester, MA on March 20, 2014, the first day of spring. She departed this world with the support of her friends, neighbors, cousins and caregivers, knowing that the power of friendship is almighty and a source of infinite strength. Her giant smile, hearty laugh and generous spirit were truly contagious. Dotty was a role model of kindness, humility and stewardship. She was a highly esteemed financial officer at the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company for four decades. She passionately believed in the transformative power of education and her legacy will guarantee that many generations will be exposed to, and have access to the arts, local history, travel, and scholarship opportunities. Dorothy was born on May 29th, 1923, in Boston, Massachusetts to Lawrence and Harriet (Young) Brown. Dotty and her older brother, Lawrence A. Brown Jr., lived in Boston and Gloucester. Dotty was a proud member of the class of 1940 at The Winsor School. She went on to attend Vassar College graduating in the class of 1944/1945. Her commitment to these institutions was unwavering throughout her lifetime. Dotty was a pioneer in the banking industry. Her tenure at the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company spanned forty years. As a Vice President and trust officer, she provided outstanding financial planning and wisdom to all her clients and was among the first women to hold such a position at the bank. She was a fearless world traveler and culinary enthusiast. Flying over the Swiss Alps in a hot air balloon, eating fried cicadas and riding elephants in India were among her adventures. Her collection of more than three thousand cookbooks was donated to the Peabody Essex Museum earlier this year. When Dotty was not far afield or watching the Red Sox, she dedicated much of her free time to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. Dotty became a member of the museum in 1957, then a museum Fellow from 1958 to 1970 and a Life Fellow starting in 1971. She was named an Honorary Trustee in 1986. She also avidly supported preserving and celebrating the art and culture of her beloved Cape Ann. She helped the Cape Ann Museum grow and root itself in the community throughout her lifetime. Dotty was predeceased by her parents, brother and soul mate and fellow world traveler, Sarah Fraser Robbins. Her friends and extended family are too numerous to count. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church 10 Church Street, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow at the Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant Street, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. GLOUCESTER – Eleanor T. (Cabral) DeCaro, 82, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph A. DeCaro, who died in December of 2004. They had shared fifty-two years of marriage. Born in Lowell on September 4, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucille (Abreau) Cabral. Eleanor was employed by the former Seafood Kitchens for many years, having retired in 1992. She and Joe were avid travelers and enjoyed trips to many locations including California, Hawaii, Los Vegas and Florida. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Ruth (Brown) DeCaro; her daughter, Debra Dahlmer; three grandchildren, Amanda, Dereck and Michael DeCaro; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Arline Cabral; four sisters-in-law, Theresa DeCaro, Catherine Vannah, Connie DeCaro and Frances DeCaro, as well as her dear friend, Faye Bunce and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dogs, Bandit and Kimmy. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Jon Dahlmer, Sr. In keeping with her wishes, services will be held privately.
