Analia M. “Ann” (Thome) Vadala, 96, passed away Monday December 19, 2016, at the Seacoast Nursing Home after a brief illness. Born in Gloucester on December 13, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Frank S. and Mary (Simas Machado) Thome. She was the wife of Pasquale “Pat” Vadala, with whom she celebrated 64 years of marriage before his death in 2005. She was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1938, and was active on the class reunion committee, keeping records for all her classmates. She was a member of Our Lady of Good Voyage Parish, and the Guild of Our Lady, where she served on several boards and committees. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and Past President of the Golden Age Club. While raising her family she was a PTA President and the Cub Scout den mother. She found great satisfaction as a travel agent and manager for Bob Smith’s Travel, a 20-year career that began in the early 1960s and introduced her to travel. Ann and Pat enjoyed many trips including those to Hawaii, Alaska, the National Parks of the Northwest, Europe, California, Bermuda, Nova Scotia, and trips to New York City. She especially enjoyed the road trips with her cousin Angie (Francis) Sutherland and her husband Bill when they traveled the southwest United States. She was especially proud of her family heritage and traditions. Among her favorite stories was how she met her husband, Pat, through her friend and classmate, Vicki (Vadala) Naves, his younger sister. The typical grandmother, she adored her eight grandchildren and her 15 great-grandchildren and the time she spent with them going to countless baseball and football games, dance recitals, plays, and school functions; and was especially proud that all her grandchildren were college graduates. Ann was an avid walker, and especially enjoyed walking the Boulevard with her children and nieces, Vicki and Jackie. It was her favorite place and family members who came to visit her would often times take that walk with her. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Vadala-DeCharles, and her husband, Philip of Ashburnham, Mass.; her son, Peter and his wife, Denise of Gloucester; her daughter-in-law, Judith and her husband, Bob Rixom of Vero Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Shawn Vadala, and his wife, Rebecca of New Albany, Ohio, Beth Ann Zerilli and her husband, Sal of Rockport, Amy Henderson and her husband, Chris of Wolcott, N.J., Mark Vadala of Gloucester, Josh Vadala and his wife, Courtney of Peabody, Dan Vadala and his wife, Lisa of Newbury, Annemarie DeCharles of Pittsburg, Pa., and Danielle DeCharles of Arlington, Va.; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her close friend and sister-in-law, Ethel Vadala of Gloucester, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Patrick A. Vadala; her sister, Matilda and brother-in-law, Leland Digou; brother-in-law, Arthur Johnson; her sister, Hilda and brother-in-law, John Amero; and her in-laws, Mary and Serafino “Sofi” Pallazola, Veronica “Vicki” and Eugene Naves, John and Mary Vadala, Dominic and Adeline Vadala, and Frank Vadala. Richard Bryan Pino, a Vietnam …

Richard Bryan Pino, a Vietnam veteran and proud member of the United States Marine Corps, died in the arms of his wife and surrounded by his closest family at 3:30 a.m. on December 27, 2016. Born to Concintino and Eleanor (Smith) Pino on June 2, 1946, he was raised in the loving home of his Uncle John and Aunt Muriel (Barrett) Pino for the better part of his youth. He was in love with his wife, Ruth (Carroll) Pino for over 47 years, and they would have celebrated 48 years of marriage on February 1, 2017. Rick taught his son, Richard Bryan Pino, Jr. and daughter, Jacqueline Ruth Pino how to catch fly balls and grounders in the field across from their Lanesville home, and he built them sledding hills every winter. He was the neighborhood Dad with kids wanting him to come out and play. His greatest lessons were to be sure of your surroundings, don’t tell secrets and don’t lie. He had an unending stubbornness, stamina, determination and a large heart. Rick lived his life the best he could every day, and it wasn’t often that he let anyone win an argument. He stubbornly refused to give into the Pulmonary Hypertension disease he was diagnosed with in 2007 and then later with ANCA Vasculitis, a disease that uses abnormal antibodies to attack one's own cells and tissue and in Rick’s case, damaged his kidneys. In the end, it was cancer that got him. Certainly a surprise after all he’d been through, but he was a tough guy to the core and he dealt with it bravely by refusing treatment because it wouldn’t promise a longer life with any quality. He wasn’t afraid of passing and, in his words, he was looking forward to getting “up there” and having a drink with his brother-in-law, Mike Carroll, seeing and hugging his Aunt Muriel and playing a game of cribbage with his Uncle John. Directly after Gloucester High School, he went to work for the Frank Sawyer Building Company, but it wasn’t long before he followed his closest friend and ally, Anthony Pino into the Marine Corp. in 1965. Immediately after graduating boot camp at Camp Lejeune, Rick was deployed to Vietnam. Home on leave in 1967 he met his future wife, and that summer he was invited to go on a MED Cruise. He refused, as he had been on a Navy transport ship with men stacked six high with the doors locked at night so the men would not fall overboard, so he volunteered for a second tour to Vietnam instead. Rick was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp in 1969, and he and Ruth were married shortly thereafter. They raised their family in their first house in Lanesville, which Rick rehabbed and remodeled into a wonderful home. When his son, Richard was in Little League, Rick coached with Harold “Bucky” Rogers for the Yankees. As Manager of the Red Sox he took the Sox from last place to second in one season. He also coached the Riverdale Rockets for many years and those boys, now men, still refer to him as coach. In addition to being a husband, dad, coach, businessman, Rick enjoyed a long series of hobbies. He was a life long hunter with friends Herb White and Joe Ciarametaro, and they spent many hunting seasons together in Old Town Maine. Later in life he learned the art of bow hunting. For many years he raised homing pigeons, champion rabbits, became a beekeeper and sold his honey to locals. He loved his family, but his passion was being in the woods with his friends or fishing in the open ocean or in a Maine river. Once his health began to fail, Rick had to give up his long and successful career of home building and carpentry business. Not being able to be idle, Rick earned a 100 Ton Coast Guard License and launched a successful fishing charter business. When his health kept him from launching his boat, Rick obtained his real estate license and enjoyed several years of selling local homes. When Rick’s health prevented him from working or doing any strenuous activity, he built a smoker from a 55 gallon drum. He perfected smoking meats and his hidden talent as a cook emerged, and he began to make his own sausage and hamburger and became the family cook. Always looking for something to do and wanting to live in the moment, his last hobby was feeding and enjoying the backyard birds, building an elaborate squirrel proof birdfeeder, which he enjoyed until recently when he couldn’t walk across the yard to fill the feeders. To say that he will be missed is an understatement. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Carroll) Pino; his son, Richard Bryan Pino, Jr. and his companion, Lisa Hollingsworth; daughter, Jacqueline Ruth Pino and his two much loved granddaughters, Allison Erin Gobeil and Gretchen Nicole Gobeil; and his beloved family, Joanne (Pino) Curcuru and her husband, Dana of Magnolia and Anthony Pino and his wife, Susan of Rockport; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Carroll of Millis, Massachusetts, Eileen (Carroll) Corvelo and her husband, Al of Somerset, Massachusetts; and a brother-in-law, Jim Pilcher of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is also survived by his two goddaughters, Janelle White Dombrowski and Amanda Corvelo Amaral; and many other nieces and nephews He was predeceased by his Uncle John and Aunt Muriel Pino; his Uncle John’s second wife, Violet Ruth Pino; his brother-in-law, Mike Carroll; a sister-in-law, Pat (Carroll) Pilcher; and sister-in-law, Ann Pino. Rick was adamant that there be no visitation or a funeral, but he agreed his family and friends could have a celebration of life to share in their grief. Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration on Saturday, January 7, at 11 a.m. at the Elks at Bass Rocks, 101 Atlantic Road, Gloucester, MA. Richard A. “Dick” Bamforth, Pastor and Teacher 1930-2017 The Rev. Richard Anderson Bamforth, 86, of 17 Brooklawn Avenue, Augusta, Maine, died peacefully, at home, on January 6, 2017. Born in Lynn, Mass. January 7, 1930, the son of Captain Charles N. Bamforth and Dorothy Anderson Allan, Dick Bamforth grew up in Swampscott where he completed high school in 1947. He majored in French and Classics at Bowdoin College and graduated in 1951. After further study at Middlebury College he taught French, Latin, and Social Studies at Cony High School for one year before enlisting in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. In the Army Security Agency he studied the Russian language in Monterey, Calif. and spent the rest of his tour of duty in communications reconnaissance on the border between the American and Soviet Zones of divided Germany. Inspired by a German Lutheran pastor who reached out to American GIs, Bamforth shifted his directions and, upon release from the Army, entered Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. He graduated with the degree of Master of Divinity in 1958 and was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. He served in two Missouri parishes, Grace Church, Kirkwood, and Holy Cross Church, Poplar Bluff. In 1959, he married Patricia Anne Pennington of Kirkwood. Their two daughters were born in Poplar Bluff. In 1966 Bamforth was called as Rector of St. Mary’s Church, Rockport, Mass. where he served until 1992. Forever a student of language and literature, he took many evening courses at Harvard and, in 1982, earned an additional Master’s degree from Boston University in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages. While ministering in Rockport, he tutored numerous refugees and foreign students in English and taught courses in Russian language and culture in the continuing education program of North Shore Community College. Bamforth retired from full-time parish ministry in 1992 and moved with his wife, Pat, to Augusta. For nine years he was a regular substitute teacher at Cony High School, served as Interim Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Augusta, from 1993 to 1994, and was for 20 years a frequent supply priest in many Maine parishes. More recently he served as Assisting Priest at St. Mark’s. His book reviews and articles have appeared in several church periodicals and, with his brother, he co-edited the autobiographical journals of their sea-going father, Iron Jaw, A Skipper Tells His Story, published in 2002. An avid gardener and photographer, Bamforth enjoyed his kayak and canoe at “Someplace Else,” his summer camp on Damariscotta Lake. Dick and Pat enjoyed traveling in Great Britain, where he sought out English and Scottish relatives, and in Russia, where he twice visited seminaries of the Orthodox Church. A spiritual director and small group Bible Study leader, he also did tutoring in the Russian language. In recent years, he taught a variety of courses in the UMA Senior College, focusing on literature, art, history, and religion. In Maine, he served on several diocesan committees and was a member of both Veterans for Peace and the Episcopal Peace Fellowship. Bamforth delighted in the nicknames others gave him. His grandchildren call him “Pa Moose,” high schoolers called him “Abe Lincoln” or “Colonel Sanders,” and parishioners often called him “Father Bam-Bam.” In addition to the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer he considered both Celtic and Russian Orthodox spirituality, together with the classical Anglican theologians, to be great resources for his faith and life. Bamforth is survived by his wife, Patricia of Augusta; daughter Jeanne Bamforth of Topsham; daughter, Margaret and her husband Andrew K. M. Adam of Oxford, England; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Adam and his wife, Laura of New Haven, Conn., Josiah Harris-Adam and his wife, Laura of Watertown, and Philippa Adam of Bristol, Maine; sister-in-law Janice Bamforth of Belmont, Vt.; niece, Judith Jervis of Danville, New Hampshire; and nephew, Charles H. Bamforth of Kingston, New Hampshire. A Memorial Eucharist will be celebrated at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 9 Summer Street, Augusta, on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1:30 p.m. Following the service, at 3:15 p.m, there will be a public reception at the Episcopal-Lutheran Church at 209 Eastern Ave., Augusta. Interment of ashes will follow at a later date in Forest Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are invited for St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 209 Eastern Ave., Augusta, ME 04330 or St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 299, Rockport, MA 01966. Arrangements are by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, Maine. Condolences, photos and memories may be shared at www.plummerfh.com.
