David W. Collins of Rockport, Mass., passed away in the presence of his family on Friday, January 13, 2017, after many years of serious battles with cancers and surgeries. He was the devoted husband of Leslie “Bonnie” (Crowningshield) Collins; and loving father to Christian C. Collins and Ross C. Collins, both Cape Ann residents. He was born on July 26, 1948, in Brookline, Mass., son of the late Muriel J. (Scroggins) Tucker and step-son of the late James N. Tucker, Jr., of Gloucester, Mass. He enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after his graduation from Gloucester High School in 1967. He was honored to achieve the rank of Specialist 5th Class and served in Vietnam and Germany. David fell in love with his high school sweetheart. They would have celebrated their 47th anniversary on Valentine's Day. They were married at St. Mary's Church, Rockport, MA in 1970. Soon after their lovely candle light ceremony, planned in only two weeks, they both moved to Germany for the final phase of his Army enlistment. David was honorably discharged early from the Army to attend New England School of Art in Boston, Mass., graduating in 1973. His graphic art career included package design for Gillette, Essex County Newspapers, and the Cricket Press in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. As a child, he loved visiting his grandmother in Lanesville, picking blueberries for her pies, fishing and exploring Lane's Cove with summertime friends. Throughout his life David had many interests including reading mystery novels, jigsaw puzzles, bird feeding and bringing treats to his favorite one-legged seagull, “Hoppy,” on Back Beach, wood carving, including miniature dollhouse furniture. Later in life he found joy in designing and decorating a popular series of birdhouses. He found great pride in his carpentry and restoring of our home in Pigeon Cove, built in 1893. His signature dish “Uncle Wally's chicken fingers” were enjoyed by many close friends. He was involved in Cub Scouts with both of his sons, and chaperoned many camping and hiking trips, snipe hunts, and matchbox derbies. His creativity and sense of humor were driving forces in his enjoyment of life. David amazed his family and friends after 10 major surgeries, many significant health struggles and battles with various cancer diagnoses. He was well known to always have a smile and a joke for those around him, remaining positive in the face of intense challenges. He always said “laughter is the medicine the Lord gave me.” He called on the power of “Sisu,” from his Finnish heritage, to help him through tough times with stamina and endurance. Those he loved the most knew how brave and kind he was all throughout his life. He was a very special man, and we were all blessed to have loved and known him. In addition to his wife and two sons, he is survived by his two brothers, Jack A. Collins and his wife, Cindy of Florida and Kevin E. Collins of Gloucester; his uncle, Robert Scroggins and his wife, Doris of Danvers, Mass.; his cousins, Charles “Skip” and James “Jay” Campbell of Gloucester and Hong Kong, Taiwan respectively; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy C. and Mike T. Eastman of Dover, N.H.; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Donna (Collins) Stevens and her husband, Walter “Buddy” Stevens of Gloucester, Mass.; and his beloved mother and father-in-law, John and Mary Crowningshield of Magnolia, Mass.; uncle, Harold Scroggins of Florida; cousins, Valerie (Campbell) Elliott and Gerald Silvera. As David wished, private interment of his ashes at Beech Grove Cemetery, Rockport, MA will take place at a later date. Donations may be made in David's memory to The American Legion, Post 98, P.O. Box 117, Rockport, MA 01966 or to the Addison Gilbert Hospital Citizens Fund, P.O. Box 1495, Gloucester, MA 01930. For online condolences and register book, please visit www.pikenewhall.com. Ann Smallidge McPhail passed away on November 23, at her Center City home in Philadelphia, Pa. Born on July 17, 1928, in Essex, Mass., she was the daughter of Orman and Neva Perkins Smallidge. She was a graduate of Gloucester High School and the School of Practical Art in Boston and studied Art History and Horticulture at the Barnes Foundation in suburban Philadelphia. She was predeceased by her parents and three brothers, David, Robert and Richard. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Donald McPhail. In Philadelphia, she was active in many organizations. She joined the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and when the society moved their offices near Independence Hall, she designed their 18th century garden. For 25 years, she was responsible for its planning and for leading a team of volunteers in its maintenance. In 1986, the PHS honored Ann with a special award for her efforts. In 1991, she became active in the Friends of the Japanese House and Garden and oversaw the renovation of the garden at Shofuso, the Japanese house in the city’s Fairmount Park, after decades of neglect. At her home in Center City, she created a large city garden that garnered much attention. A chapter in the book, “American Women’s Gardens” was devoted to it as an example of a city garden. In 1963, Ann became a guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She was asked to focus on Asian art. Since she had no specific knowledge of Asian art, she set out to educate herself. She did this by researching the subject, building a library of Asian references and traveling to Asia, visiting India alone 20 times. Her efforts were so successful that she was appointed to the museum’s South Asian Art Advisory Committee. She gave visitors tours for 53 years in many departments of the museum but focusing on India, China, Korea and Japan. She knew nearly every square foot of the vast building and devoted so much of her life to teaching others of its wonderful collections. Recently her health declined, but she continued with great determination to carry on. The new South Asian galleries presented a new challenge which she eagerly embraced. Her last tour was given exactly two weeks before her death. As Director Timothy Rub and President Gail Harrity wrote, “Feisty, funny and fully engaged with the museum, Ann will be deeply missed." A celebration of her life will occur at on January 29, 2017, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Evelyn Bridget (McMillan) Sutera passed away peacefully at home on January 20, 2017, after a courageous battle against ALS. Her devoted husband of nearly 50 years, Stephen Sutera, along with her sons, daughter, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, and grandchildren, spent the final years of her life taking care of Evelyn as her health deteriorated, never leaving her side. Affectionately calling themselves, "Team Buttercup," the family rallied around Evelyn and Steve, constantly filling their home with laughter and love and taking Evelyn on many a weekend "field trip" around town. And even though Evelyn couldn’t communicate back to her family, it was very clear that seeing her family so united made her incredibly happy and proud. In their many years together, Evelyn and Steve loved to travel, spending many an airplane trip to Las Vegas or road trip to Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and Twin Rivers Casino. Both also loved playing cribbage and any and all card games, with bingo being a favorite of Evelyn’s. But by far, their favorite activity of all, was spent with their children and grandchildren. They both loved attending whatever sporting event or school play they participated in, and without a doubt, Evelyn was the loudest cheerleader in the crowds. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Stephen Sutera; her children, Stephen Sutera and his fiance, Donna Curran, Lisa Sutera Lucido and her husband, Chris Lucido, Michael Sutera and his wife, Sagan Suter, and Scott Sutera and his wife, Jessica Sutera. She also leaves behind her many grandchildren, Nicole Lucido Pizzimenti and her husband, Nick Pizzimenti, Kyle Lucido and his longtime girlfriend, Erin Jermyn, Alex Lucido, Caitlyn Lucido, Shelby Sutera, Ellie Sutera and Christian Curran. She also leaves behind her siblings, John McMillan, Jean Mattuchio and her husband, Louis, Thomas McMillan and his wife, Louise, Leo McMillan and his wife, Kathy, along with many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life is being held on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Visiting hours are from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester. Family and friends are cordially invited. Her Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church, Holy Family Parish, in Gloucester, continuing on with her burial in Calvary Cemetery. After Stephen Hartley "Red" Nippert died on January 19, in Newport, R.I., his many friends mourned his passing. He was a father, a lifelong fisherman, an avid reader, and was incredibly kind to anyone in need. He helped many people, yet always made it sound like they were doing him a favor. His joyful sense of humor was warmhearted, he laughed at his own misadventures and reveled in pranks. He had few equals at telling a great story. Stephen was the son of Naval Commander Glenn E. Nippert and Mary Jane Bohl, a reporter and newswoman. He was born June 15, 1950, in Bethesda, Md., and traveled widely, until his family settled in Newport in 1960. He was known by many nicknames, Nip, Red (due to his hair), or Red Man. He was a free spirit and was adamantly opposed to the Vietnam War. He bravely faced the draft board not knowing if he'd be released or jailed; fortunately, he was exempt. After adventurously hitchhiking across the U.S., including Woodstock, he took a job on a fishing boat and found his life's work. He loved the sea and was at home on the sea. In his extraordinarily long career, he fished on seven boats catching fish, lobsters, sea urchins and made the Guinness Book of World Records for catching the most slime eels! Red also bought his own boat, the Kristen and Michael, and served as an adviser to a NOAA commission to reduce the number of sea mammals inadvertently caught by commercial fishermen. He was a rigorously careful and extremely shrewd fisherman and was tough and hard working. Gloucester and the Crow's Nest held a special place in his heart. Born in Boston to Lester C. and Mabel A. (Johnson) Hotz and raised in Roslindale. He enlisted in the Army in July, 1943 and served as an Engineer Mechanic in Track Vehicles, and was awarded several medals for his service in the European Theater. After the war, he remained available in inactive service and was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of Sergeant. After active service Lester worked as Service Manager for Mirak Chevrolet in Arlington, Gregor Chevrolet, and Ellis Chevrolet in Manchester. On a treacherous snowy night in 1950 Lester met the love of his life Gloria on a blind date. They were married in 1951. Lester and Gloria purchased their first home on Forest St. in Manchester MA in 1954. Throughout the years, Lester and Gloria had a menagerie of animals including horse Chester, pony Merrylegs, sheep, a goat, many dogs and a cat. In 1962 Lester started his own auto repair business at "the Old Regent Garage" on the corner of Bridge and Pine Streets in Manchester. He purchased and renovated 76 Summer Street in 1968 which was home to Kettle Cove Preservatives. The property served as a full-service gas, repair, and automobile inspection station under the Texaco brand. He was a talented auto mechanic who was trusted by many. Despite his fear of heights, Gloria gave Lester flying lessons as a gift in 1969. Lester quickly discovered he adored flying and earned his private pilot's single engine license. His primary planes were Cessna 150 and Skyhawk models. Due to his confidence and demeanor, close friend and corporate jet pilot Captain Bruce Gilson considered him one of the smoothest pilots he ever flew with. In 1969, Lester and Gloria purchased a lovely summer home abutting the White Mountain National Forest from Lester's Aunt Mildred and Uncle Bob in Warren, N.H. The home is believed to be the oldest dwelling in the small town with tax records dating back to 1763. Lester and Gloria traveled extensively throughout Asia, Central and South America, as well as the Southern United States and Hawaiian Islands. Their journeys brought them many memories such as seeing the Komodo Dragons in Borneo, the Incan Ruins in Peru, and the wonders of the Galapagos Islands. Gloria was an avid birder and in their travels they logged sightings of 3200 species of birds together. In 1992 Lester retired and he and Gloria spent winters in their Florida house in Cedar Key. After Gloria passed in 2007, Lester moved to Gloucester, with his daughter and family. His dear friend, Skip (Philip) Marr enabled Lester to spend summers in his later years in Warren by setting up his motorhome in the yard and helping Lester as needed. Recently his health required frequent monitoring and he moved to Seacoast Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility where he developed friendships with many of the outstanding healthcare staff. One of Lester's proudest moments was his grandson's accomplishment of earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics, as Lester helped inspire him with his vast knowledge of engines. He is predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Gloria (Clark), his sisters June Lovejoy, Dr. Davida Comba, and sister-in-law, Lucille Davis. He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Hotz Taliadoros, her husband Ken, and their son Jonathan, and his sister-in-law, Natalie Clark. Also, nieces and nephews, Davida, Alan, Vanessa, Adam, Mark, Amanda, Susan, Richard, Heidi and many great friends who have kept in contact with him over the decades. Keeping with his wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to Cape Ann Animal Aid Association, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930; MSPCA, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844; Friends of Seacoast, 292 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA 01930; or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. For online condolences, please visit www.greelyfuneralhome.com.
