formerly of Essex and Manchester — Eli Myron Young, 81, of Naples, Fla., and Holderness, N.H., and formerly of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., passed away on July 6, 2013. He was born on October 5, 1931 to Simon and Jenny (Shopnik) Young. He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Snow) Young; sister, Winifred Blacklow (Robert); two sons from a previous marriage, Geoffrey (Claire Carpenter) and Lawrence; and granddaughter, Genevieve Young. He was a loving uncle to one niece and 10 nephews, one of whom is George Hunt, who was like a third son to him.

GLOUCESTER: Vito G. Benedetto, 92, passed from this earth on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. He was the devoted husband of Priscilla F. (Sawyer) Benedetto who died in February 2003.
Born in Milford on June 22, 1921, he was the son of the late Dominic and Rose (Morrili) Benedetto. He had resided in Gloucester since 1932. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, served aboard the USS Card Aircraft Carrier with the submarine patrol before being honorably discharged in December 1945. He was the proud recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation for destroying more submarines than any other team.
Vito was employed as an ice maker with Cape Pond Ice Company for forty-five years before retiring in 1985. He was also a member o the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion.
He is survived by his four children, Robert Cusick and Marilyn Misuraca both of Gloucester and Marjorie Meinerth and her husband, Lawrence and Joyce O’Maley and her husband, Michael both of Florida; a brother, Dominic Benedetto, Jr. of Danvers; a sister, Gloria Schiminsky and her husband, Paul of Baltimore, MD. Also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his son, Ronald P. Cusick, three brothers, John, Alfred and Ernest Benedetto and a sister, Lillian Rogers. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A special thanks to Rose Sawyer, Rosemarie Horne and Jenna Horne as well as the caring staff on Atlantic Shores floor at Seacoast Nursing & Rehab. Center and Hospice of the North Shore.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 10a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the “Resident Activity Fund” at Seacoast Nursing and Rehab. Center, 292 Washington St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Interment will be held in Seaside Cemetery, Lanesville.

Sister M. Patrick (Eleanor) Burke, 86, a Sister of Mercy for 62 years died Thursday, July 11, 2013, after a period of declining health. A native of Dover, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of Arthur P. and Mary Josephine (Greene) Burke.

Sister Patrick received her B.A. in English from Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett, New Hampshire, and her M.Ed. in guidance from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. She was a dedicated teacher and administrator in schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Sister Patrick taught at St. Patrick School in Manchester, and St. Patrick School in Berlin, and was principal at St. Mary School in Claremont, New Hampshire. In Massachusetts, she was a teacher at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in East Boston. From 1970-1977, she was Director of Marian Court Junior College (now Marian Court College) in Swampscott, Massachusetts. For 25 years, from 1977-2002, she taught at St. Ann School in Gloucester. After retiring from full-time teaching, Sister Patrick served until 2012 as a teaching assistant at Immaculate Conception School in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Sister Patrick is survived by a sister, Frances Burke, and a brother, Arthur Burke, both of Dover; a niece, Mary Desjarlais; three nephews, Kevin, Michael, and James Burke; many cousins; and her Mercy Community. She was predeceased by a brother, Maurice Burke.

Friends may call at the Warde Health Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, N.H., on Saturday, July 13, from 9:30-11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the chapel at 11a.m.

Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Dover, New Hampshire.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 21 Searles Road, P.O. Box 420, Windham, NH 03087-0420.

He was a graduate of Gloucester High. He then went on to pursue a career in cooking, at which he started at Den Mar Nursing Home. He followed that by working for many years at Addison Gilbert Hospital. He finished his beloved career at The Sisters of Notre Dame.

A healing spirit to both humans and animals, she considered her greatest role to be a nurse educator, having been a college nursing professor in New Jersey for the first half of her life. She is lovingly survived by her sisters, Kay Kusma of Gloucester, Mass., Karen Thomas of Phoenix, Ariz.; niece, Danielle Sost; and grand-nephew, Jackson Sost of Burbank, Calif.; nephew, Al dos Santos of Gloucester, Mass.; and nieces and nephew, Tracy Hughes, Terry Jones, Jamie Lewis, and Todd Van Buren.

TOPSFIELD: Paul F. Jackman, 84, died peacefully Wednesday evening, July 10, 2013, at Golden Living Center due to natural causes.
Born in Lynn on August 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Frederick and Katherine (Wood) Jackman. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he served in the 765th AC & W Squadron and was honorably discharged in May of 1954. He earned a B.S in Business Administration at Boston University in 1957, worked in the aerospace industry, and then as a self-employed businessman. Paul also ran for 1st Essex and Middlesex district’s State Senate seat in 1978.
He is survived by his former spouse, Barbara Buonaugurio of Methuen; his three children, Stephen F. Jackman and his wife, Karla of Bradford, Susan N. (Jackman) Sisolak and James M. Jackman and his wife, Maureen all of Topsfield; five grandchildren, Sarah (Jackman) Guy, Danica (Sisolak) Drouin, Ethan Sisolak Jordan and Matthew Jackman and great-grandson, Justin Guy.
All family and friends are invited to attend a “Celebration of Life” social scheduled Sunday afternoon, July 21st from 2 – 6 p.m. at the Jackman home at 18 Forrest Rd, Topsfield. Should friend’s desire to make memorial contributions, the family suggests the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester.

GLOUCESTER: Brian M. Muise, 57, died Monday morning, July 15, 2013 in the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington following an extended illness.
Born in Gloucester on February 26, 1956, he was the son of Frank A. Muise, Jr. and the late Catherine (Dagle) Muise. He was a lifelong resident and a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1974. Brian was employed by Americold as a warehouseman for many years.
An avid boater, he loved being on the water and fishing. One of his favorite pastimes was riding around the Back Shore with his fiancée. A loving and devoted father, he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin M. and Krystle (Campbell) Muise; his daughter Lauren E. Muise; his fiancée, Sandra Hitchcock, his brother, Richard, husband of Susan Muise; two sisters, Bonnie, wife of David Savoie and Judith Chandler; his former spouse, Gail A. (Testaverde) Muise and several nieces and nephews.
A brief service will be held at 4 p.m. followed by visiting hours on Thursday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester until 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. GLOUCESTER: Arnold W. “Arnie” Ellis, Jr. 75, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Massachusetts General Hospital following an extended illness. He was the husband of Hazel (Swinson) Ellis.
Born in Gloucester on January 27, 1938, he was the son of the late Arnold W., Sr. and Alice M. (Martin) Ellis. He was a lifelong resident and graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1955.
Arnie was employed for many years as a dispatcher for Boston Towing and Transportation until his retirement. He was formerly a Massachusetts State Trooper.
In addition to his wife of fifty-three years, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Arnold and Karen (Casey) Ellis of Elk Grove, California; four grandchildren, Hilary and Hannah Ellis and Kellen and Jared O’Brine; two brothers, Bertram Ellis, companion of Elizabeth Bergman and Winfred Ellis; a sister, Sheila, wife of Ronald Coffin; a brother-in-law, John, husband of Joan Swinson; sister-in-law, Mary Ellis; his stepmother, Virginia Ellis; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister, Beverly McCarron and brother, Donald Ellis.
A memorial service will be held in the St. John’s Episcopal Church at a later date. There are no visiting hours.
