GLOUCESTER: Elvira C. “Veda” (Gentile) Shannon, 86, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital. She was the wife of the late George V. Shannon, Jr., who died in March of 1999.
Born in Gloucester on May 7, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Albina (DeMarco) Gentile. She was a lifelong resident and a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1945.
Mrs. Shannon was employed by the City of Gloucester for many years in the School Lunch Program at both the Ralph B. O’Maley Middle School and the Gloucester High School, having retired in 1987.
Veda was a hard worker who was always kind to others and never judgmental. She truly loved the City of Gloucester and especially enjoyed spending time on Stacy Boulevard. A loving and devoted wife and mother, she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her son, G. Vaughan Shannon, III; a brother and three sisters-in-law, Frank P. and Mary (Linquata) Gentile, Mildred (Piscitello) Gentile, Mary (Crowley) Gentile and Christine Burr; two brothers-in-law, David Shannon and Richard, husband of Marlene (Stone) Shannon; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Provie Giovanni and three brothers, Carmen, Rosario and Antonio Gentile, Jr.
In keeping with her wishes, a memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday in the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester.

Rockport, MA — Gertrude E. (Korpi) Newman, 93, of Rockport, wife of the late Grant T. Newman, passed away Friday morning, July 19, 2013, in the Den Mar Nursing Home in Rockport. Gertrude was born on March 14, 1920, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of the late Walter and Hilda (Maki) Korpi. She graduated from Rockport High School with the Class of 1938 and continued her education at the Boston Conservatory of Music in Boston. She was an accomplished pianist and accordionist who loved to entertain. She liked taking rides, going out to eat, and chatting with her friends, as well as traveling with them to Las Vegas and Atlantic City where she loved to play beano. She enjoyed picking blueberries and would head home where everyone would wait for her delicious cakes and pies to come out of the oven. But what she loved the most was spending time and babysitting for each and every one of her children. She was a wonderful and loving woman who will be missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Militello and her husband, Matthew; two sons, Grant Newman and his wife, June, Bruce Newman and his wife, Deborah, all of Rockport; grandchildren, Grant T. Newman and his wife, Christina, Lisa Newman, Holly Green and her husband, Joseph, Stephen Militello, all of Rockport, Keith Militello and his wife, Jessica, of Gloucester; great-grandchildren, Michael and Olivia Newman of Rockport, Trevor Duke of Quincy, Jameson Militello and Marley Russ both of Gloucester.

Gloucester, MA — Ileen A. Graham (Burns), 67, of Gloucester, Mass., passed peacefully at her residence on the afternoon of July 14, 2013, after a long illness. Ileen worked to organize the opening of the Visitors Center at Stage Fort Park, the Maritime Heritage trail, The Pride Stride and more. She loved being involved in community actions from her time on the PTO to saving Cape Ann’s vernal pools, and touched the lives of many in the process. She briefly wrote a column on East Gloucester for the Times. Ileen is survived by her sister, Sherrill (Burns) Graham; brother, Thomas Burns; her son, Jared Graham; her two grandsons, Nicholas and Avery; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was loved and her vibrant spirit will be missed. Ileen requested that there be no formal services. The family requests you may honor her life and love of Gloucester by visiting and enjoying the history of the town. Donations can be made, if you wish, to Gloucester based non-profit organizations.

GLOUCESTER: John Carroll “Carl” Hurst, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Claire A. (Tremblay) Hurst.
Born in Gloucester on December 20, 1933, he was the son of the late John W. and Mary J. (Cavanaugh) Hurst. He attended St. Ann’s School and was a graduate of the Gloucester High School.
He was an avid football player in high school and college. He co-captained the 1951 Gloucester High Class B Championship Team.
A U.S. Army veteran, he enlisted in 1955 and served as honor guard for military funerals in Washington, D.C. for two years.
He attended Bentley College and worked locally as an accountant, and as a sales manager for Union Oil Company of Revere.
In 1985, he purchased Ravenswood Spring Water Company and managed all aspects of a small business. He greatly enjoyed delivering spring water to the elderly and retelling their stories. After the building was destroyed by fire in 2000, he sold the business to Vermont Pure Company.
Carl was a good friend to many and loved by all. Those who knew him will fondly remember his integrity, willingness to help, and boundless energy.
He had endless enthusiasm for all he did, whether it was playing Sunday morning volleyball, card games, or going for a sauna. He especially enjoyed the outdoors; he loved hiking, golfing, sailing and scuba diving.
When he moved to East Gloucester, yard work became a major pastime and he “loved moving rocks.” Upon retiring, he and Claire spent several weeks during the winter in Palm Springs, California. They also enjoyed many years of extensive travel. Over the years, family visits gave him much pleasure, especially time spent with his granddaughters.
In addition to his wife of fifty-four years, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol L. and Joseph “Skip” Boissonnault of Park City, Utah; two granddaughters, Anne and Marguerite Boissonnault; his brother, James Hurst of Gloucester; three sisters, Shirley Moore of Winchester, Patricia Johnson and Judy Corcoran of Gloucester, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Muise.
In keeping with his wishes, his remains have been donated to Harvard Medical School. There are no services. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to Pathways for Children, 29 Emerson Ave., Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester.

Bielicki, 80, of Gloucester, husband of Gail (Haberland) Bielicki, passed away on Friday afternoon, July 19, 2013, at the Mass General Hospital, after living and boldly battling leukemia for the past two years. Ron was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on November 16, 1932, the son of the late Henry and Julia (Pularski) Bielicki. Ron was such an active person throughout his life that we can only scratch the surface of the lives he touched and people that were impacted by his generosity.

Gloucester, MA — Myra M. “May” (Moulton) Munroe, 97, of Gloucester, wife of the late Herbert Joseph Monroe, passed away quietly, at her home, with her family at her side, on Thursday morning, July 25, 2013. Myra was born in Bull’s Cove, Buren, Newfoundland, on July 4, 1916, the daughter of the late Thomas S. and Ethel (Dibbins) Moulton. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and had been married to Herbert for 58 years and raised seven children. She was an avid gardener, a creative artist who crocheted, quilted, knitted and made many clothes. She taught the values of family and loyalty to all who entered her life. She will be deeply missed by many people.

ROCKPORT: Robert F. “Bob” Tarbox, Sr., 82, formerly of East Gloucester, died Friday evening, July 26, 2013 at the Den-Mar Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Gloucester on June 23, 1931, he was the son of the late Fred Tarbox, Sr. and Gladys (Dickinson) Tarbox. He was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1949.
A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, he served as Military Police and was stationed in Europe as part of the occupational force. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant in May of 1954.
Upon his return, he went to work for Murmac Manufacturing Company on Grove Street. In 1963, he began a career that spanned thirty-three years at Gloucester Engineering, having retired in June of 1996.
Bob was involved in numerous organizations including, the Gloucester Lodge No. 892, B.P.O. Elks, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler, the Capt. Lester S. Wass Post #3, American Legion, the Cape Ann Chapter No. 1471 Loyal Order of Moose, and the Amvets Post #32 of Gloucester. He also loved to golf and enjoyed the time he spent at the Bass Rocks Golf Club. A loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by two sons, Robert F., Jr. and Kathy L. (Adams) Tarbox and Dana S. Tarbox, Sr, his former daughter-in-law, Carolyn M. (Grover) Tarbox; two daughters, Michelene Mina and Dawn M. Thomas; his former spouse, Elaine L. (Arsenault) Tarbox; five grandchildren, Tanya (Parisi), wife of Tim Bouchard, Dana S. Tarbox, Jr., Nicole M. Tarbox, Michael R. Tarbox and Sean J. Tarbox; ten great-grandchildren; his brother, Fred Tarbox, Jr.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves many dear friends, including his lifelong friends, Don Cook and Louie McGrath. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Margaret “Peg” Langley and Norma Chomac; and brother, Donald Tarbox.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 7 p.m., with a memorial service conducted by the Gloucester Lodge of Elks at 6:30 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to Gloucester Elks Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 86, Gloucester, MA 01930.
